Intranet portals have become the primary platform for application development for many companies. Not only do the portals provide the technical infrastructure needed to assemble diverse resources and applications, but they also offer the contextual engine needed to help tie the information in those modules together, such as search, navigational infrastructure, security, and permission management. However, with the heavy demands placed on IT departments, many companies do not have the time, money, or expertise to create and maintain all the Intranet-based applications everyone wants.
